Opposites

So, today, all four of my brothers competed in and finished an Ironman Triathalon. If you’re not familiar with that, imagine swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and running 26.2 miles ALL IN ONE DAY. They finished in times from 11 and a half hours to over 13 hours.

Today, I took a nap for over 2 hours.

Way to go Caldwell Pain Train!! Maybe tomorrow I’ll think about doing some exercise or something.

June 23, 2008 - 3:46 pm Amy F - Ha! You make me laugh, Shannon. Congrats to your brothers... that is quite impressive!

June 23, 2008 - 5:53 pm Laurissa - That is so cool. I have to commend them . . . and you, if you really got a 2 hour nap in you're lucky.

June 25, 2008 - 7:18 am Kim Cherry - hi shannon! i don't know if you remember me or our family...you did our session at a sort of remote beach that we had to walk down a slippery, windey path to get to. anyway, those pics are proudly hanging in our living room - still - after three moves!! i found your blog through kathi and just wanted to stop in and say hello!

June 26, 2008 - 1:51 pm Andrea - Props to the brothers. I, too, sat on my can all day. It feels good. :)

June 30, 2008 - 11:47 am Debbie - Hello, It is so good to find your blog! Your photos are AMAZING! I really mean it. AMAZING! Your family is so cute too. I have a hard time believing that we ever spent a night talking about whiz-poppers with Andrea. I don't know if you remember that particular sleep over. anyway if you would like to get in touch, I think you have my email from this. i have a blog, but I've locked it down so send me your email address and I'll send you and invite. I miss seeing you, and I love being able to keep track of you somewhat now. Debbie (Maughan) Guest

July 9, 2008 - 12:13 pm kellicrowe - you took a nap. i can not tell you how much i miss you in the garden. it isn't like it is a secret...it would just take too long.

Tricia and Jason at Eagle Ridge Golf Course

Tricia has been waiting patiently for her images… Let’s not waste any more time. On to the images!

Above: the details… all ready and waiting to play their big part. :)

And- let’s get this show on the road!

tjwblog1-3.jpg

Tricia’s best friend couldn’t hold back the tears once she saw Tricia in her dress…

tjwblog3.jpg

tjwblog1.jpg

I love how you can see her friend’s supportive approval in the background.

tjwblog2.jpg

She looked amazing.

tjwblog5.jpg

I love that little Mona Lisa smile…

tjwblog4.jpg

Let’s not forget the guys! They were a little less sentimental.

Jason’s daughter was a delight.

The beautiful scenic location at Eagle Ridge in Gilroy.

tjwblog9.jpg

I LOOOVE this shot that Dave caught. (I love it when I get to bring the hubby to work!) Jason was surprised and delighted when the Star Wars theme was played as they walked out after the ceremony.

tjwblog15.jpg

No fun being the only kid at the adult table…

tjwblog17.jpg

Yes, there was dancing… but this was only the beginning. Jason brought down the house with his solo number…

tjwblog18.jpg

Here he is, preparing… The music was “Dancing Queen” and apparently this was an encore presentation from an earlier performance that involved a cruise ship and a lot of booze and many of the people that were there that night… :) I’m only showing one image, but the whole routine was as good as this. tjwblog161.jpg

Tricia, Jason… Thanks so much for inviting us to be a part of your totally fun day!

June 20, 2008 - 5:24 am Joanna - That is hilarious about the Star Wars theme! Beautiful images, Shannon!

Summer begins…

Just hours into summer vacation-

My mom (a teacher): It’s passing too quickly!

Shelby (a student): It’s only 4 o’clock? What am I going to do with my life?

June 13, 2008 - 5:46 pm Hilary - Haha, we're only hours into ours. Although, my summer is different than most moms. :)

June 14, 2008 - 7:05 pm Andrea - I love it! Shelby--you are going to hang out with Auntie Andrea very soon. Get yourself pumped up.

Whoa…

**I meant to publish this on Saturday! I wrote it Friday, but couldn’t figure out how to set it up to publish later. :) **

Somehow, eleven years has passed since I first met this soul…kidsblog5.jpg

Seriously? HOW!!

Someone trying to sell me something recently asked if I was over 25. I nearly said no, and I really meant it. Then it occurred to me that, no, I’m not under 25, and not barely… I’m seven years past that mark. It was a weird moment. For some reason, Shelby’s birthdays are even weirder to me than my own. At first motherhood was such an uncomfortable suit to wear. But it grew on me and became my skin. I wouldn’t know who I was without the lessons she has taught me. I’m such a different person than I would be without the lessons she taught me as we’ve taken this journey. It took more patience and selflessness than I thought I could ever muster. And more self-restraint. Not because she’s a difficult child… quite the opposite! But parenting is crazy. It’s been an amazing journey at each turn.

The latest turn, one I was really not expecting, is finding out that this girl is really, really funny. She’s always had a great sense of humor and been quite clever, but now her humor is real… not kid humor, but stuff that I find myself laughing at as if she was a peer. What a delightful surprise!

shelbyblog.jpg

I’m really hoping that the upcoming journey to middle school is full of only delightful surprises… :P

June 9, 2008 - 10:11 am Hilary - OMG, girls camp, Yw --ALL next year. Yipes is right!

June 10, 2008 - 7:22 pm Laurissa - I can't believe she's 11! I think she was 2 the last time I saw her. Hopefully we'll be able to get in touch more after we move back west. That last picture is a totally a face you'd make.

June 11, 2008 - 5:34 pm Amy F - Happy Birthday to Shelby! She is absolutely a joy to have in class... and I'm not blowing smoke, either!!

June 21, 2008 - 7:10 am Lisa Busby - Hey Shannon, I don't know if you will ever see this, but I was reading your blog and I think Shelby is the age I was when we first moved in. Andrea and I were about to start junior high and you and Kristi were in 8th grade. I can't believe your little girl is our age when we first met you guys. Wow that is sooo crazy.

July 7, 2008 - 12:32 pm Brooke Schwab Photography - so beautiful! your photos capture your daughter so well! i love them. time sure does fly and i will not know what to do when stella is 11!

Bonus points

So, a week and two days before Mothers Day I got a call from a guy who wanted to have pictures of his daughters to give to his wife for Mothers Day. I was already booked for that week, but decided to squeeze them in. I told him I wouldn’t have fit him in if he wasn’t a dad. But the fact that he was thinking even a week ahead, trying to do something nice for his wife… I’m a softie. I squeezed them in on my next day off, and managed to get them proofed late Saturday night so he could show her the images on Sunday morning.

blogh3.jpg

A sweet moment…

blogh4.jpg

She had the best faces! I love this age (under1), where they interact, but aren’t really acting for the camera… Still genuine…blogh6.jpg

This age (2) is a little different. They are a bit more wary and either get cheesy or avoidant. So to get a real, genuine expression is a treat. Even if it’s not a smile! :)

blogh8.jpg

Of course, once dads get involved, the smiles become genuine and unavoidable!

blogh2.jpg

I love this shot… it’s happy.

blogh11.jpg

We happened upon this chalk art, just begging to be photographed!

blogh9.jpg

We couldn’t leave Fozzie out! This shot makes me smile.

blogcollage.jpg

I loved all the different expressions, so I had to put them all in one place!

This was fun. I’m glad I could help surprise a mom with something I would love to get!

June 6, 2008 - 5:18 pm Joanna - These are soooo awesome, Shannon! I bet the mom was thrilled!

June 7, 2008 - 6:50 am Krista Lund - i love that this dad did this! i would've fit him in too. i so wish my hubby did something like this. that would just make my day! my year! he would be off the hook til next mother's day! as always, beautiful work! love the one with the dog and chalk art.

June 7, 2008 - 1:15 pm melanie - shannon - just popped on here and read a few posts from the last month - love your voice, you have this incredible gift for clarity in communicating with others through images and words. frankly, i'm smitten with you...and i think san jose is so crazy lucky to have you! warmly, -melanie-

July 2, 2008 - 10:36 pm Amy - Shannon, Beautiful pictures. What a cute dad to think of such a cute idea. I almost teared up! Amazing talent!

Susan and Greg’s Wedding

Susan and Greg’s wedding was such a great day. Everyone was just so happy and excited and the whole affair was laid back and fun. We felt like part of the family. And the food at the reception assured that I will keep doing weddings. It was awesome! (You all know the real reason I decided to do weddings is for the food!)

So without further ado… the images!

sgblog1.jpg
The church and the golf club were right next door to each other. I got a kick out of the sign. :)

sgblog2.jpg
I loved the detail on her dress, and the cool books in the room we were in for getting ready.

sgblog3.jpg
I love this shot. She’s so calm getting ready, her dress awaiting the big moment in the background…

sgblog4.jpg
Her necklace was pretty cool…

sgblog5.jpg
Adorable flowergirl and her bear.

sgblog6.jpg
For some reason, I really adore this shot of Greg’s parents…

sgblog7.jpg
I love this shot too… it really speaks to me about how women support each other in the process. This is two of her friends using their talents for her. One doing her makeup, one giving her a blessing/energy work.

sgblog8.jpg
A cool overview shot of the entire ceremony.

sgblog9.jpg
I love this shot immediately after the ceremony, they’re both glowing.
sgblog11.jpg
sgblog10.jpg
sgblog12.jpg
Greg really enjoyed cutting the cake…
sgblog15.jpg
Their first dance… sweet… and fun- they took some lessons and showed us their moves!
sgblog13.jpg
Gettin’ jiggy…
sgblog14.jpg
And their rings, just on a plate… but I liked how it looked!

June 4, 2008 - 8:54 am Alison - Shannon, that is one of the prettiest ring shots I have ever seen. I thought "wow" even before reading your caption... simple is good. Love all your shots of the wedding. Very sweet and real... and beautiful:)

June 4, 2008 - 4:10 pm Brenda Miles - Aww. So pretty.

June 4, 2008 - 5:53 pm lroah - OMG - My husband's best friend got married here! I remember the Pray-Play sign very well!!!! Great pics!

June 5, 2008 - 6:53 pm Tina - Gorgeous!

random

popsicle.jpg

Hi… I just feel like being random for a minute. I’ve very busy lately, seeking balance. May was really busy, business-wise. I’ve still got a ton to do to catch up. I’m not complaining, just explaining! The blog is about a month behind with sessions to post, but I’ll get it done.

But in the moments when I wasn’t kind of freaking out about my to-do list, I was making a bigger to-do list. Things I need to do to get balance. The last few weeks, we’ve been all about simplifying. We loaded up two whole truckloads of stuff from our house to give to the Goodwill. That felt so good. The garage can now fit an actual car! Horray!

My closet is color-coordinated and tidy. It makes me happy.

My bookshelves have books standing upright and decorations in them that are not soley made up of soda cans and happy meal toys. (Not that it was that way before… )

All of this cleaning and organizining helped me realize that I’m a neat-freak, deep down under the junk. I get so frustrated with the messes and the feeling that it’s pointless that I kind of freak out and ignore, but then I start to ignore other things in my life and I disconnect. So, it’s time to embrace the neat freak. I work better, I focus more, I’m better all around. So from now on, I’m going to be the most organized person you’ve ever met. Get ready.

So the plan… organize my stuff, then organize my time, organize my life. And then with my new-found time and energy, I’ll take up more hobbies and get more stuff and start all over again. :)

(btw… the picture is random, too… an illustration of summer, but not a particularly good one! I just grabbed something, and my laptop doesn’t have everything…)

June 2, 2008 - 9:33 pm Brenda Miles - Good for you, you little freak (as in neat). I want a picture of the bookcase:)

June 3, 2008 - 3:41 pm Stefani Meyer - You sound exactly like me. Except we've replaced the happy meal toys with nail polish. I bet if I turn around right now and look at the counter behind me there will be a bottle of fingernail polish... yep, sure enough, hot pink. We have clutter around a lot, but I thrive when it is neat and clean. And I so hear you on the "simplify to fit more in" lol!
