How to have the best birthday ever.

I’ve found the key to having the best birthday ever is to witness a very close call between your youngest child and a motorcycle early in the day of your birthday. Luckily, said young child escaped without harm. But for the rest of the day, I was just so stinking grateful that I was not...

Stefani Meyer - How funny that you would mention socks from REI. Brad has always liked them, but during the Christmas season we had a board where we were supposed to write down what brings us joy the only thing that Brad wrote on the list was “Good Quality Socks from REI”

I’m glad your kids are safe, and that you had a great birthday.

Kent - What I missed your birthday?! Wow I am off! Well I already have something for your – hee hee. I saw it and couldn’t resist! Great picture and so glad it was a near miss. Had one myself the other day (almost got i n car crash that would have been bad). Kind of a little wake up call isn’t it!

Brenda Miles - I’m glad everyone was around to wish you a Happy Birthday! Scary! Happy New Year too!

The Year of the Homemaker (not the Homemaker of the Year)

I declare this year the Year of the Homemaker for me. See the end of the rainbow? That’s my home. My pot of gold. The last few years have been a great adventure, getting my business on its feet. It’s fun. I love it. But it also takes a lot of attention. And I’ve let...

Hilary - I was totally gonna buy a wheat grinder before I got my little diabetes issue with the pregnancy and now I think the smell of home made bread might make me go into a coma. Perhaps after the baby’s born. Although, you have a kitchenaid right? That makes things much easier.
Go you, being a homemaker is so much harder than being a good anything else because there is NO pride except self satisfaction.
And heavens knows that’s not worth much on many days.

Lisa - Oh Shannon, this post made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside – I could have written it myself, and I’m putting that book on my MUST BUY list. I can’t wait to read about your adventures, and I hope to follow in your footsteps. It’s so easy to let business take over, but family and home is where it’s at, for sure. :)

Holli - That is a great goal, Shannon. I totally wish I was local so I could go to the bread making class. I’ve had Kathi’s bread, and I know it is awesome. Maybe you can video it and put it on You Tube for me. :-) I have been planning meals on Sunday nights since I was pregnant with Jared – about 5 years now – and it makes the week so much easier. I don’t have to face the decision of what to make for dinner every single day – just once a week. You are a woman of many talents and I think it’s great that you look to strengthen each of those talents. Good luck!

Carmen - Ditto … I’ve been done work at 3pm everyday. At home I’ve been cooking, baking, organizing the chaos, playing games & reading to my kids, helping with homework, and on and on! I’ve missed my family the last few months :( nice post shannon

and a beautiful picture for the icing on the cake!

stacy benintendi - sounds like lofty goals to me and i know you can do it! i think all of us can say that we need to be more domestic…i know i can.:)

January 8, 2009 - 10:27 pm

Stefani Meyer - Oh… this makes me think of me. I felt like the holidays were just a little chaotic (and not the good “we’re-having-a-lot-of-family-time” chaos). I’ve let things slide and now I have A LOT of recovering time to do. I have a vision of my home being nice, warm, pretty, loved and taken care of too. It’s not so easy for that to happen when I have piles of junk mail stacked in the corner or molding fruit in the pantry, and heaven knows what else is hanging around ruining this vision… sigh. BUT I do have some goals for the upcoming year to prevent this from happening again. Maybe not to become a domestic goddess like you are destined to become, but maybe some better organization skills and less procrastination. Thanks for the heads-up on the book, it sounds like my kind of philosophy. I’m glad someone lives their life this way. I’m gonna go get it soon.

lroah - Great post. As always. I will so miss you at WPPI. Talk to you soon!

January 9, 2009 - 12:08 pm

Kaija - thanks for being inspiring! i love being intentional about the things in my life. and this blog post is a great example of you being intentional. funny, i’ve resolved to let go of my home a bit (but not the cooking!) to get my dissertation done — a time and place for everything — but it is good to see people embracing their time and place.

Amy F - Shannon, sign me up for the bread making class! Please!! I love to bake but have a huge fear of making bread. I did it once and failed miserably. I already have a wheat grinder (and wheat!), so I’m ready to go. :)

January 12, 2009 - 9:59 am

Debbie - I can’t believe you banned eating out until APRIL! That is a lofty goal in itself! Good luck and all the other ‘not so domestic’ ladies out there are pushing for you.

January 16, 2009 - 7:05 pm

davina - Ooooo…this sounds like a lovely book! I can’t wait to check it out…

February 10, 2009 - 9:49 pm

Emmalee Montez - I love this post! You inspire me… I need to improve and I don’t have a career! I’m going to have to check out this book. Thanks for sharing your goal!

christmas decorations

I’ve been a Christmas grinch. I haven’t really meant to be… I still love it and all, but I’ve been so caught up in trying to get all my work finished and out the door, that things have slipped a bit on the homefront. Shelby was asking daily if we could put the tree up,...

lilia - Oh, these are both just faboo!! I love the focus on the first one…I think that we are going to have to hang some snowflakes from the ceiling around here too! :-)

December 19, 2008 - 10:18 am

Kari - That is totally our house with Naomi. We just put snowflakes on our door. We can never have enough holiday decorations up for her.
And I love how clean a room looks from the ceiling. You have no idea that it isn’t all pristine underneath the frame. I’m going to have to remember that next time I am taking pictures!

December 19, 2008 - 11:40 am

Andrea - Nice job Shelby! I remember quite a few holidays in my youth that I had to take over the decorating. So, I guess that makes you like Mom?

Fun day for me.

Today my family went to visit the cousins… everyone except me. I had a fun session this morning, then took the afternoon wandering antique stores. I bought a couple of old cameras. I’m excited to play with them. I had takeout, had control of the remote, I cleaned the house and it stayed clean. It’s...

Susi (dragonflydreamer) - It’s been awhile and I’m so glad I dropped by to read your blog and look at you amazing photographs. You inspired me to trade in my disposables for my Canon Rebel. I am learning slowly, but I hope to some day take photos that make others feel something special the way I do when I look at yours. You really capture people and relationships at their very essence.

My favorite view of Old Faithful

It’s been a crazy month… sorry for my month-long absence from blogworld! But it’s been a great one. You know how much work it takes to get ready to leave and then to catch up when you get back…  Plus run a business and take care of a family at the same time… Well, I’m...

Janet - Well, welcome back! You’ve been missed!

Raquel Garcia - I’ve missed you. I love your work and I’m always checking-up on you. You are among my “favorites” and I was so disappointed to see the same “Opposites” post each time I checked. Glad you had a good time but even happier that you are back. Keep posting because we’re reading.
